A railing is the only part of a house that every guest touches. It is also a life-safety assembly that an inspector will load-test with their own body weight. Artistic Ornamental Iron fabricates both realities into one piece hand-forged from solid steel in our own Twin Cities shop, welded through at every joint, fine-ground until the connections vanish under the palm, and finished over a zinc-rich galvanized base with baked-on architectural powder coat.
We build interior stair railings and volute-terminated handrails, open-side balcony and loft guards, mezzanine and catwalk guards for commercial interiors, and exterior porch, deck, and stoop handrails engineered for freeze-thaw exposure. Exterior assemblies are detailed differently from interior ones: anchorage is core-drilled and epoxy-set or welded to embedded steel rather than surface-fastened, base plates are detailed to shed water rather than pond it, and the full galvanized-plus-powder-coat system is mandatory because a Minnesota winter finds every uncoated edge.
Guards and handrails are governed by the International Residential Code on single-family work and the International Building Code on commercial and multi-family projects. Three requirements drive our fabrication. First, the assembly must resist a 200-pound concentrated load applied in any direction at any point along the top rail which is a connection and anchorage problem far more than a material problem, and it is where mechanically fastened railings fail. Second, no opening in a guard may permit the passage of a four-inch sphere, the child-safety rule that sets maximum baluster spacing. Third, the triangular opening formed by the tread, riser, and bottom rail on an open stair is held to a tighter sphere limit. Handrails must also be continuously graspable along the run with the specified profile and clearance from the wall. We fabricate to these numbers as the baseline and detail anchorage so the connection is never the weakest element in the system.
Baluster styling is where a railing acquires character. Single and double knuckle balusters are the most requested traditional profile in Twin Cities remodels. Basket balusters four bars flared and re-gathered at the center carry more visual weight and suit taller runs and grander stair halls. Hammered twists introduce texture that catches light along the flight. Forged collars, applied rings, and scroll panels can be layered into the design, or omitted entirely in favor of clean square or flat-bar stock for modern builds in Edina, Plymouth, and Maple Grove. Because every component is forged rather than pulled from a catalog, a baluster pattern can be matched to existing ironwork elsewhere on the property.
Stock components are the cheapest option and appropriate when the design is simple and repetitive. Custom fabrication costs more for four identifiable reasons: solid steel stock is heavier and more expensive than hollow tube; forged detail such as baskets, twists, and collars is hand labor measured in hours per assembly; full welding plus fine grinding adds substantial finishing time; and the galvanize-and-powder-coat sequence is a multi-stage process rather than a single coat. Length of run, number of turns and landings, straight versus curved or radiused sections, interior versus exterior anchorage, and finish complexity all move the number. We quote by the actual assembly rather than by a per-foot average, and we will tell you plainly where stock components would serve you just as well.
